Canada to
negotiate an FTA with Colombia |
|
|
Canada's Prime Minister
Stephen Harper said his country was ready to
negotiate a free trade deal with Colombia. President
Uribe and PM Harper met last July 16th to talk about
the political and economic situation in Colombia,
and the full range of Canadian engagement in the
country. Canada is commitment to support Colombia’s
efforts to achieve domestic peace and security and
protect human rights. Both Governments are pleased
with the start of free trade negotiations starting
together with Peru and also agreed to negotiations
on a double-taxation agreement. They anticipate
mutually beneficial agreements that will strengthen
the partnership between our countries. Most
Colombians are dedicated to the core values of
successful countries: freedom, democracy, human
rights and the rule of law. Canada shares these
values and seeks to nurture them through its

US, Colombia agree on new amendments to FTA
|
|
|
|
The United States and
Colombia reached agreement last 28th of June on
amendments to the bilateral free-trade agreement
sought by the Democratic-controlled Congress. "The
US-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement will
contribute to our countries longstanding
collaborative efforts to promote economic
opportunity and development, peace, human rights,
the rule of law, and security in this important
region," US Trade Representative Susan Schwab said
in a statement. The amendments to the pact agreed
with Colombia in November 2006, demanded by the
Democratic majority in Congress, offer guarantees of
labor rights and environmental protection. Such
amendments will be subject to new approval by the
Colombian Congress |

Colombia:
Attracting Investor Attention |

|
Fitch Ratings released
last July 18th a special report titled 'Colombia:
Attracting Investor Attention,' highlighting key
macroeconomic factors and capital market reforms as
well as sectors that have been some of the chief
beneficiaries of these developments. 'Colombia's
improved security combined with a stable
macroeconomic framework has improved the country's
long-term growth prospects, bolstering consumer
confidence and transforming Colombia into an
attractive destination for foreign investment,'
according to Fitch Senior Director Glaucia Calp.
Foreign direct investment (FDI) has more than
tripled between 2003 and 2006, averaging
approximately 4% of gross domestic product (GDP)
over the past three years. During the same period,
gross domestic investment (GDI) has grown from 17%
of GDP to 23.5%. With GDI of 25.5% estimated for
2007, investment levels are expected to be
comparable to those experienced in the mid-1990s.
